Firefighters had the chance to try out new underwater equipment at an incident in Fenland.
Dogsthorpe crew and rescue vehicle, along with a crew from March, attended reports of a car in water off the B1098 in Christchurch and when they arrived, did not know if any people were involved so set up equipment to use the service’s new underwater camera.
Watch Commander Will Collins said: “We deployed the sled into the water with trained in-water firefighters on board and used lines to position it.
“By then using the camera we were able to see if anyone was in the vehicle and get the vehicle registration.
“The new kit worked really well and enabled the crews to get all the information they needed without directly having to get into the water, reducing the risk to the firefighters and speeding up the operation.”
The van was found in the river in Upwell Road – without a driver.
A police spokesman said: “The van was found in a ditch without a bonnet or engine.
“We suspect that it is a potentially stolen vehicle that has been dumped.”
The road was closed for around two hours and diversions were put in place while the vehicle was recovered.
