A £770.000 scheme to repair a worn out stretch of a major Fenland road is due to start in a week’s time.

The A141 Isle of Ely Way in March is due to be resurfaced between Burrowmoor Road and up to and including Mill Hill Roundabout. This busy section of road, which sees around 17,000 vehicles a day, has become worn due to heavy use.

Work, which starts on September 1, will be carried out at night and is part of a programme of works planned in and around the March area.

It is hoped carrying the work out between 8pm and 6am over the five weeks it is scheduled to take will help minimise disruption.

Works on phase one (up to the roundabout) will be undertaken with a one way road closure and signed diversion route. Traffic heading south towards Chatteris will be able to continue along the A141, and will be escorted through site with the use of convoy vehicles. Traffic heading North Will be directed through March along the B1101 and B1099. During working hours on phase one there will be no permitted exit form Knights End Road onto the A141.

For phase two (resurfacing the roundabout) traffic heading north / south will be maintained via traffic lights. On alternating nights to allow resurfacing of the roundabout, March Road Wimblington and Wimblington March will be required to be closed.

Gavin Wiseman, Project Engineer, said: “This is a vital scheme to improve this busy road. We apologise for any disruption that we may cause while these vital works are carried out and have programmed the scheme to be carried out at night to reduce inconvenience as much as possible.”

Cambridgeshire County Councillor John Clark, local member for March West said: “This is part of a programme of works recently to improve roads in and around March. Although this will no doubt cause some disruption it does mean our major rural roads are being improved and maintained. If Fenland is to thrive it must continue to have good roads.”
