CHATTERIS market is staying put despite a suggestion it should be moved because of parking congestion caused each Friday morning by shoppers parking next to stalls.

Town Councillors heard on Tuesday how an angry Chatteris resident had written to Fenland Council's markets manager Mike Chapman, requesting the market be moved to Furrowfields Road car park at the other end of town.

Town council clerk Joanna Melton said: "The person was very concerned about the traffic congestion and said it was creating a very dangerous situation for mums pushing buggies around the market and disabled people with electric scooters.

Mr Chapman told councillors he had received only two complaints about Chatteris Market in 10 years and that it had traditionally been held in Park Street for more than 30 years.

For many market traders it was their favourite pitch and they saw the availability of adjacent parking as a bonus.

Mr Chapman said enhancements to Park Street, carried out in 2001, specifically installed electricity supplies for stall holders for lights and chiller units.

This, of course, would become redundant in the event of a move.

He also said a safety study was carried out, as part of the enhancements. On the whole, councillors agreed with Mr Chapman.

There was some concern that occasionally Park Street becomes a bit clogged up on market mornings but councillors said parking next to the stalls had never been discouraged by market traders.
