OUR recent picture of The Wheel public house brought back memories for March estate agent and auctioneer Neville Blackwell.

Mr Blackwell said in the early 1940s Collingwoods conducted many auctions on the front of the wheel site. Furniture, bicycles, plants and produce were all sold there. A sale still remembered is that of a Hurdie Gurdie organ belonging to Tommy Overland which sold for £16.

Auctions on the Wheel front continued for many years along with the indoor auction in the Palace Hall. Helping with the auctions were the late George Hurst, of North Street, March, and Bob Ellington, of Wisbech Road, March.
