FORMER farmer Richard Robert Angood of Eastwood, Chatteris died at Heron Court, March, on Sunday. He was 98.

Educated at King's School, Ely, he was a keen cricketer, tennis and hockey player. He played hockey for March until he was in his fifties.

After leaving school he joined his father Percy on the family farms at Byal Fen, Manea, and Langwood Fen, Chatteris.

In 1939 he married Elizabeth Kimpton from Somersham after building the family home at Four Winds, New Road, Chatteris.

As a young farmer he was forward thinking and innovative, acquiring tractors while many still had horses. Post war he embraced new farming techniques and became an active member of Wimblington Combined Drainage Board, participated in the early days of co-operation with Marcam and MDS Supplies and was a lifelong supporter of the NFU and Conservative Club.

He enjoyed many trips motor racing with friends in the days of Surtees, Moss and Hawthorn when safety barriers consisted only of straw bales. He also enjoyed gardening.

His life was all about farming and family, both of which he cherished greatly. He leaves his wife of 68 years Elizabeth, daughters Jennifer Tucker, of Harrow, Eunice Rummings, of Oxford, Christine Kritzinger, of Cape Town, and son Richard, of Chatteris, as well as six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The funeral will be at Cambridge Crematorium on Tuesday (2.30pm) followed by a memorial service at St Peter's and St Paul's, Chatteris (3.30pm).
