RETIRED train driver William Ransome died on Saturday February 10 at the Edith Cavell hospital, Peterborough. He was 86.

Bill joined British Rail as a teenager cycling from his home in Doddington to March where he worked as a cleaner. He progressed be become a fireman and later achieved his ambition to become a driver of steam trains.

He had the honour of driving The Flying Scotsman as well as the train carrying HM the Queen to Sandringham.

In his younger days Bill enjoyed fishing. Recently he had devoted his time to his family and garden.

He leaves a widow Winifred to whom he had been married for 68 years, two daughters, Mrs Anne Seward of Chatteris and Mrs Carol Mann of Parson Drove. He also leaves four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The funeral service will take place at Mintlyn Crematorium, King's Lynn on Monday February 26 at 1pm.
