PLANNING officers want more information before they make a recommendation on whether a controversial 300million biomass plant should be built near Sutton Bridge.

The village has reacted furiously to plans for the Wingland Enterprise Park, in Centenary Way, with almost 95 per cent of voters in a parish poll insisting they do not want the development.

South Holland District Council will decide whether the proposal goes ahead - but neighbouring West Norfolk Council is being consulted because of the site’s close proximity to the county boundary.

Although they have no principled objection, planning officers have suggested that West Norfolk Council lodges a holding objection until more information on the impact of the plant is known.

They want more details on air quality monitoring and air pollution, restrictions on what materials can be processed at the facility and assurances that the plan passes tests relating to flood risk.

West Norfolk Council’s planning committee will consider the project on Monday (January 7).

Developers Peterborough Renewable Energy (PREL) want to build a 48-megawatt energy park to include process building, fuel storage, vehicle stores, a visitors’ centre, tank farm zones and a car park.

The site would be about a kilometre from the nearest home in West Norfolk.

Campaigners have formed a group to protest the plans - Bridge Against The Incinerator (BATI).

They say they are determined to “defend their village” and that the so-called “green incinerator” would harm the environment and produce inefficient power.

Just 28 of the 470 people who responded to the parish poll voted in favour of the scheme.

Developers PREL said it would be “unwise to place too much weight on the results of the poll” due to the low turnout.

Almost 100 people responded to a South Holland District Council consultation on the plans last year - with many residents voicing their objections.
