Today marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival of wartime evacuees from London.
This momentous event was captured in the following week’s Wisbech Standard, which published pictures of the boys of the Stationers’ Company’s School lined up for refreshments at a mobile canteen in the yard of the former railway station after getting off the train.
The boy with the dark jacket standing behind the girl in the white skirt is John Bathurst. Stood in front of him is his sister,
He said: “I lived happily with the Bedford family at 48 Cannon Street for three years. The people of Wisbech were very good to us all.
“There can be few of your readers who remember that day but, although living far off in Canada, I still do.”
