A March man is remembering how a Magpas Air Ambulance team came to his rescue after he fell from his shed roof on Friday May 31, 2017.
Malcolm Arnold describes himself as “an extremely fortunate man” after the accident last year and says he will “never forget” what the Magpas crew did for him.
Mr Arnold, who is in his early 50s, was working on his garden outhouse. He was on the roof when it came loose.
Malcolm said: “I can remember the corrugated cover moving and me trying to hold on”.
Despite attempts to cling-on, he fell eight feet to the ground. When trying to get back up again he realised he had fallen onto a metre long crow bar, resulting in serious injuries to his stomach.
Due to the severity of his injuries the Magpas Air Ambulance had to be dispatched, they confirmed he had ‘perforated his bowel in three places’.
Magpas doctor Saad Jawaid and paramedics Andy Smith and Dan Cody flew straight to Malcolm, giving him enhanced pain relief and sedating him. They then flew him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Malcolm made an ‘excellent recovery’ and returned to work four months later.
“I will never forget what Magpas Air Ambulance did for me,” he said. “I’ll always be grateful to the incredible team who came to my rescue that day.
“I don’t worry about the little things in life as much as I used to. I believe you’ve just got to get on, whilst you can.”
Saad Jawaid said: “It’s fantastic to see Malcolm looking so well. He is a very brave man and a prime example of why Magpas Air Ambulance is here.
“It’s because of our doctor and paramedic team that we were able to fly to Malcolm that day and provide him with the hospital care he needed as soon as possible.
“We are not a state funded service and can only do what we do thanks to the generous support from the local communities within which we serve.”
Malcolm has kept the crow bar as a reminder of the day when everything changed for him.
