Smokefree England will be a reality on July 1 and Fenland District Council is stepping up its campaign to help businesses get ready for D-Day.

Jodie Crane has been appointed as the Smokefree Environment Advisor to support local businesses that will be affected by the new legislation. Jodie comes from Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust on a one-year contract to support and advise businesses on what they must do to ensure they are operating within the Health Act 2006.

Jodie's post has been funded by the Department of Health and her role will be to take an educational, advisory and non-confrontational approach both before and for a period of time after the legislation comes into force.

From the beginning of next month, all enclosed public places and workplaces will become smokefree, protecting everyone from the harm of second-hand smoke at work and in public.

At 6am on Sunday July 1, virtually all enclosed work places will become smokefree. These include offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, membership clubs, public transport, taxis, schools, hair dressing salons and driving instructor vehicles.

Jodie has been active in advising businesses across Fenland on what they can to comply with the law. There are three areas where people can be in breach of the new legislation:

- Any individual smoking in an enclosed public space.

- Owners and managers of businesses that do not display the correct warnings outside their premises.

- Owners or managers who fail to prevent people smoking in a smokefree area.
