There were so many anglers keen to take part in the third annual charity fishing match in memory of former Wisbech man Ricky Rodwell that it was held over two lakes for the first time this year.
The event held at the weekend saw 37 fisherman take to the waters of both the large and small lake at the Kingsland Fisheries at Coates.
The event is organised by Ricky’s cousin Jo Satt and her husband Robert who were overwhelmed by support from businesses who donated prizes for the peg draw and raffle and sponsored the anglers.
Jo said: “We are extremely grateful for their continued support of the local businesses.”
Jo added: “The day was beautiful yet again, with Ricky keeping the black clouds at bay for us. Fishing was hard especially in the morning as the previous week’s weather had been very inconsistent however once they started biting huge weights and some lovely sized fish were being caught, my father-in-law, David Satt, who hasn’t fished for 20 plus years but travelled all the way from Kenilworth for the day to support such a good cause was overjoyed with his big catch!
“We had lots of visitors who came to support and stay for the presentation and raffle including the gorgeous little Archie who is the Son of Ricky’s best friends that he sadly never got to meet but I’m sure Ricky is watching over him.”
The results this year sees a new name to be added to the trophy, last year’s winner James Phoenix (Ricky’s cousin) fought hard to retain the trophy but finished in 3rd place. The results were:
1st: Rob Smith - 160lb 12oz
2nd: Peter Parlett - 129lbs 12oz
3rd: James Phoenix - 122lb 8oz.
This year we raised £1955.60 in sponsors and £285 from raffle tickets sold giving a grand total of: £2240.60 which will rise there is still some sponsor money to collect.
So over the course of exactly two years and three matches a total of £5642.3 has been raised for Papyrus which aims to help young people who have either attempted suicide or have suicidal thoughts.
Ricky took his own life in June 2015 while living in Australia, where he had moved to start a new life. His mother Maggie Mainwaring, stepfather Paul and father Barry Rodwell and stepmother Annette all live in Wisbech.
