UPWELL Parish Council's latest meeting at the village hall opened with a presentation from the local youth group, led by locality youth worker David Rodwell. The group is working to establish a youth club in the village and has applied for funding to buy equipment and improve facilities. Sixteen-year-old Lucy Brand told the council the group already had 18 members and was expecting to recruit many more when facilities were in place. There are plans to offer two sessions, one for junior and one for senior members; each supported by a group of volunteer parents, who are attending youth work training. The council offered its wholehearted support and was particularly pleased to note Lucy's interest in representing the youth voice on the council. The council discussed outstanding priorities and agreed to form a number of working groups to tackle issues identified as actionable during the coming year. The meeting heard that a request had been received from Norfolk Deaf Association for a venue to host its mobile hearing service. The association is raising money for a vehicle to travel the area on a regular basis, providing hearing aid repairs and servicing, equipment demonstrations, signposting and support services to the deaf and partially deaf in the parish. It is hoped the vehicle will make a monthly visit to Upwell once enough funding has been received. A community information point for the parish was requested by Councillor Gooch. This issue had previously been raised in 2006 but a suitable location could not be found. The information point would offer free access to the internet for parishioners wanting to access local council services or find information and resources on-line. Following the possible new offer of a venue for the information point, the council agreed to investigate the matter again and it was hoped a suitable location could be found this time. The next full meeting of the council will take place on February 12 at the village hall (7.30pm). Agendas are published on noticeboards in Upwell, Three Holes and Lakesend a week before each meeting and there will be a councillor surgery for half an hour before the meeting for members of the public with concerns or queries they wish to raise with the council.
