A FENLAND clergyman says he has received hate letters after his condemnation of gay 'marriages'.

The Rev Jonathan Wood, pastor of the Whittlesey Baptist Church, hit out after seeing photographs of same-sex weddings in a Peterborough newspaper.

"Whilst I condemn any kind of attack on individuals themselves, the 'sin' cannot go uncondemned," said Mr Wood.

"We are being fed a lie that tells us the vast majority of people in this country accept this state of affairs. I must talk to a lot of very different people."

Mr Wood, who has been pastor of the church for four years, says the Bible is clear "that it is a wrong lifestyle-and I am not just referring to some Old Testament verses that the homosexual lobby always says are the only references to condemn this.

"It also goes against the obvious laws of nature."

He added: "Again, I am the first to condemn any acts of unkindness against the so-called 'gay' - it is sad to see that word hijacked - community, but equally, something that is wrong must of itself be condemned.

"God's love and kindness are extended to all."

Mr Wood is now bracing himself for a further backlash over his views but he said he was reluctant to get too further involved. He said colleagues he knew who had spoken out previously had been verbally and physically abused.

"I wanted to say what I had to say," he told the Cambs Times. "And I've said it.
