I AM writing with outrage and dismay at the council’s idea to introduce a pay and display system in our local car parks. Small local businesses are struggling enough in this economic climate without a charge being introduced which will almost certainly encourage peoplw who drive into March to go to out of town supermarkets instead, who offer free parking to their customers.

Most people who live on the outskirts of March, particularly the elderly and people fromt he local villages rely on their cars to take them into March to do thier weekly shopping and return library books etc. Many elderly people and young families will be ill able to afford the extra costs involved in having to pay for parking.

Employess of the local businesses will also be significantly out of pocket, as many park in these car parks during the day. How would Fenland District Council employees who work at County Hall feel about having to pay daily for parking their cars?

I am sure the out ot town supermarkets will be thanking our Council for introducing this scheme as they will be bound to profit from it. Unfortunately I don’t think Somerfield will be feeling quite so excited about it as the majority of thier customers use City Road car park whilst doing their shopping.

The Council needs to be encouraging businesses and people into our town and I strongly feel that if the system is introduced we will soon become a ghost town.
