A service for people with a learning disability has been rated as needing improvement to make it safe and effective.

Craegmoor, based in the South Fens Business Centre at Chatteris, is registered to provide personal care to people in their own homes.

It was visited by watchdog body, the Care Quality Commission in June who found that; “staff knew what action to take if they thought anyone had been harmed in any way but the correct reporting procedures hadn’t always been followed when they suspected someone may have been harmed.

“This could place people at risk of harm,” the report said.

It added: “Although staff had received training in the administration of medicines they weren’t always following the correct procedures and as a result this could place people at risk of not receiving their medicines as prescribed.”

The base was rated as meeting regulations when it was last visited in 2013.

On the plus side the centre had been thorough with their recruitment and the right people were employed, the report said, staff knew people well and were aware of their history, preferences and likes.

People’s health and welfare needs were met well by staff, the report said, and people were supported to be independent with their meals.

A new manager had compiled an action plan of improvements needed, the report stated, and had placed a focus on recruiting more staff so that existing staff were not asked to work extra shifts.

There were also plans to allow people who use the service to be part of the interview process so they could meet the candidates and give their opinion on their suitability for the role.
