WALKERS trekked along the old railway between Chatteris and Somersham as plans to maintain the disused line continue to accelerate.
More than 30 people took part in the walk, which was organised by Chatteris Town Council and led by Laura Osbourne, from the Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust and Biodiversity Partnership.
Councillor James Carney, Deputy Mayor of Chatteris, said he hoped a working group would be set up to help maintain and clear the six-mile Chatteris stretch.
“It was great to see so many people turn up on the day,” he said.
“They all showed an interest in both the history of the old railway line as well as its future, and what can be done to improve it for other users.
“It was very encouraging that people not just from Chatteris or Somersham attended but from further afield.
“The next step is to galvanise that interest into a group which will then form the basis for making funding bids from various bodies to turn these proposals into reality.”
The walkers were joined by Councillor Steve Criswell, parish council chairman and county councillor for Somersham, who gave a short history of the Somersham end of the railway line.
Somersham already has an established working group, which has created a walk as well as nature and dog walking areas.
