A FENLAND company, which supplies young plants to customers all over the country has unveiled its new multi-million pound nursery. The £4.7million complex, launched by R Delamore Ltd in Station Road, Wisbech St Mary, is the biggest nursery in the world, built solely to grow young plants from cuttings. The main glasshouse covers 14 acres of the Fens.Peter Wood, Delamore managing director, said: "This is a massive leap forward for our business. It has been a big achievement building a place like this, and now the business will be able to flourish."It was officially opened last Thursday by Peter Seabrook, gardening columnist and a previous presenter of the BBC's Gardeners World. The nursery took two years to complete, and uses state-of-the art technology and computers to produce the perfect environment for the plants to grow.Mr Wood said: "The whole nursery is divided into 10 mini nurseries. We now have control of the environmental conditions for each individual mini nursery to produce our plants as efficiently as possible."Delamore works with specialist plant breeders all over the world to produce 1,000 varieties of young plants, sold to garden centres before reaching the public. It has held the Royal Warrant from the Queen for more than 20 years, and has won numerous awards in recent years, including Eastern England Agricultural Business of the Year. The company employs 215 people and plans to add 20 more growing zones in surrounding fields. When Mr Wood bought the business in 1990 from Ron Delamore, its market share was in chrysanthemums. It has now diversified into a much wider range of plants, including fuchsias, container plants, geraniums, shrubs, and perennials.
