MORE than 250 drivers were caught not wearing a seatbelt in a week-long crackdown.

Cambridgeshire police issued 252 motorists with a 60 fine for not wearing a seatbelt or having passengers without seatbelts between Monday, September 10, and Sunday, September 16.

Officers also fined seven drivers for having children under 14 without a seatbelt.

The campaign was part of a Europe-wide initiative organised by Traffic Information System Police (TISPOL).

PC Steve Gedny, casualty reduction officer, said: “There were seven drivers fined for having children under 14 without a seat belt.

“Not only are they putting the children’s lives at risk, but also other people in the car.

“Seatbelts are a simple but life-saving device and it is against the law to travel without one.

“I would like to remind drivers that it is their responsibility to ensure young passengers are wearing seatbelts.”
