I WOULD like to thank your papers for highlighting my correct concerns of the SIXTEEN Foot Bank road, and thanks to the highway authorities for their prompt action.I also admire them for seizing on my, perhaps incorrect, wording of 'bank slipping' instead of 'bank sinking' to find a way of doing absolutely nothing to remedy the problem.Particularly parents of children on the Christchurch-March school bus must feel very relieved to know the authority can find no problems along there. My concern has been, since my own children used this route more than 30 years ago, that it will take a dreadful incident involving multiple drownings before something is done. After protests by Upwell (Isle) Parish Council and othersseveral years ago an earth bank about a yard high was built along the vulnerable stretches, and it is this that has 'slipped', sorry 'sunk' over the years to its present state.I am sure most rate payers would have preferred to have had this small barrier made up as and when necessary instead of money being spent on wider pavements, narrower roads, parking bays and street furniture of all descriptions in our Fenland towns. As the driver of a motor vehicle which ended up in the river after an accident along there, I am one of the lucky ones.I feel it is my duty, as I now have grandchildren who use these roads, to urge all drivers to spend five minutes and the cost of a stamp to voice their concerns about these dangerous roads next to rivers, to their local village, parish, town, district or county councils so that no more lives are lost unnecessarily for lack of a barrier.MR A RUSSELLCrown FarmChristchurch
