YOU asked for comments regarding the change in timing for the planning and development meetings at Fenland District Council. As a former member of that committee I can only say I am appalled at the inconsistency shown by the current administration. On page 20 of your issue of January 13 the following appeared: Have your say on draft plans.Five key objectives were listed by the council, the first being Community First which included the phrase "to deliver excellent customer service, improve access to services and information".In the same article Councillor Geoff Harper said: "We have achieved this in partnership with local people and we intend to continue this winning formula by consulting with local people."On page six of the same edition was the story stating that planning meetings would switch from 6.30pm to 2.30pm despite 85 per cent of the public attendees surveyed opposing the move.It seems to me these two stories show the hypocrisy the Conservative group displays towards local government. If there is a concern about making decisions late at night, did the council look at the possibility of meeting every three weeks to shorten the agenda? I doubt it.Once again the interests of the few (Tory councillors) outweighs the needs of the public.Anything that makes it more difficult for the public to participate in the planning process must be a backward step and as usual the Fen Conservatives are right up there leading the retreat.R J HIBBERTBellmans Road Whittlesey
