FROM what I understand the population of Chatteris is just below 10,000, yet Fenland District Council tells us that 10,000 of us visited their Fenland @ your Service shop in the High Street in the months since May this year. From that I gather that all of us paid the shop a visit, and some of us went twice. And the other main Fenland towns did the same with all the figures nicely rounded down to the exact thousand with no oddments at all.Come on councillors, who do you think you're talking to?We're not Russian peasants in the Soviet era who will listen to the sort of garbage churned out by the Pravda (Truth) newspaper. We are well educated and sophisticated westerners (well, we were once). We have eyes and brains as well.Every time I pass that shop there's no one in there other than the employees. In fact I bet they do less work than the bloke who drives the council road sweeper, at least the one who does Chatteris anyway. The March shop is no better and it had a staggering 42,000 visitors this year, much more than the population, I bet.The council is emulating the actions of the Kremlin in Downing Street by lying to us, no doubt trying to justify the existence and the expense of these useless buildings. No wonder Pop Jolley resigned. They'll be telling us next that the secret tractor factory at Welches Dam produced three million tractors last year. There was no mention of the missing £1.5million that the council failed to collect either, was there? Also no mention of any support it failed to give to the campaign to save Doddington Hospital. Let's hope the hospital never needs it. It will, however, serve councillors right if it's not there when they do.DICK MANDLEYWenny EstateChatteris
