READING a letter from Mike Bentham (January 27) I must agree that these days with equipment available, roads should not be left in such a state that other road users' lives are at risk. However, living in the Fens in the winter to a certain degree we should accept that we are surrounded by an agricultural industry and when the soil gets wet, it makes mud.A few years ago a newcomer to our village "which is muddier than Benwick" asked me what should he do about the mud on his car.I suggested he should buy a set of mud flaps and drive carefully. What is important to remember is that if a Jack Russell dog fouls a footpath the owner can be prosecuted. So surely a road that is fouled should be subject to the same law. However, Mr Bentham suggests Benwick has the muddiest roads in the country, but I would like to nominate Coveney, Wardy Hill and Sutton Gault, which will probably come a close second to Manea.PAUL FOXWisbech RoadManea
