THE Probus Club's August meeting was opened by chairman Reg Wenn with 45 members present. Speaker was Patrick Druce, the round-the-world sailor, who returned to tell the second episode of his story, having told the first part last year.

One of the incidents recounted this time was his arrival, with his family, at the Israeli port of Haifa where they finished up looking down the barrel of an Israeli Gun Boat and a powerful searchlight. After many questions they were given help to repair their failed transmission box, before continuing their voyage. Patrick answered many questions and sold a few copies of his book entitled 'They Said We'd Never Make It'.

The monthly competition was drawn by Fred Watt. Winners were David Reed, Ron Durant and Fred Payne. Fred Watt went on to give the welfare report.

Derrick Dixon read the social report on behalf of Terry Shad and bowls secretary Bert Green reported a bowls match at Heminford would take place on September 5.

There were no council or police reports this month. has been awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing by the University of East Anglia.

Helen, 31, Doddington, is married to Paul, with whom she has two children. She is daughter to Ray and Judith Fox.

She was educated at Lionel Walden School, Doddington, Cromwell Community College, Chatteris, and before Homerton School of Nursing in Cambridge where she gained her nursing diploma.

Work at the Papworth Hospital and Edith Cavell Hospital, Peterborough followed before Helen took up her nursing degree as a five-year home studies course.
