THE June meeting of Chatteris and District Probus Club was opened by chairman Reg Wenn with 53 members and one visitor, Jim Palfreyman, present. Members stood for a minute's silence in memory of Peter Brighting who had died. Speaker Paul Harrington, from the Ouse Washes reserve near Manea, gave a presentation of detailed data of the wild life and plants on the reserve, interspersed with pictures of the many species of birds which come and go throughout the year. He was thanked by the chairman and presented with a bottle of wine. Fred Watt conducted the monthly competition. Winners were Rex Simpson, Denis Broughten and Bill Watkinson. Social secretary Terry Shad reported that the numbers were down at the quiz night, but those who attended had enjoyed the evening. The winning team captain Edward Samuel was presented with the Rose Bowl Trophy. It was announvced that a coffee morning is planned for July. The council and police reports were given by Brian Higgs. Members wondered why people had to attend the Fire Station to have their eyes tested. It was stated that this was only for diabetics.The chairman reported on the East Cambs and Fenland PCT board meeting, telling members he was awaiting written answers to the questions he had asked relating to beds and ward closures at Doddington Hospital, and the difficulty some people have getting hospital transport. At the next meeting, on Monday July 10, speakers will be from March and District Writers Circle.
