MAJOR plans which would reshape Whittlesey by building a massive “new community” have been submitted to councillors for a second time.

The landmark application, made by Larkfleet Homes, would see 460 houses built on land at Bassenhally Farm, along with a 70-bed nursing home and a local centre.

Larkfleet Homes’ original application was refused by Fenland District Council in July but they have decided to re-submit the proposals.

The planned development would span across almost 50 acres, with a third of the 460 new properties dedicated to affordable housing.

Whittlesey town, district and county Councillor Martin Curtis has started an online Facebook group to encourage the town’s residents to share their views on the application.

Cllr Curtis said: “It appears to be an identical application, which must mean that the developer has submitted it expecting a refusal so he can take it to appeal.

“I can’t think of any reason this could have been submitted other than this - once again there has been no prior discussion with officers at Fenland about it.”

One comment left on the Facebook group by Gary Hook, read: “Before this goes ahead, the transport links between this development and Peterborough will have to be improved, otherwise we will become the biggest permanent parking lot in Cambridgeshire, due to permanent gridlock.”

The plans claim to follow a ‘Homes for the Future’ design, with open spaces, car-parking and new access roads developed. The application is expected to be put before councillors in the spring.
