A moment of quick-thinking from a man in Whittlesey has been praised after he dragged a young boy and a woman from the River Nene after they had fallen in.

Ian Palmer was thanked for his heroics on Facebook after he rescued a grandmother and her grandson from the river close to the Manor Leisure Centre.

Mr Palmer sprang to action after a man on the other side of the river alerted him to the situation.

He and several others then helped lift the woman and child to safety. It is believed the boy’s pushchair had rolled into the river while they were feeding the ducks.

Ian’s wife, Debbie, said on Facebook: “Well done to my husband Ian and all concerned with assisting the lady this morning that ended up in the river.

“I guess there are a few shaken and wet people but thankfully that’s all it was. It could have easily been a different story had there not been people on hand.”
