A starving stray dog, found wandering at the side of a railway line covered in tar, has been called Brewster in a naming competition to help raise funds for his care.
Brewster is ready to go into his new foster home after spending time at vets where they have been putting him under sedation for short periods of time to slowly peel the tar from his sore body.
Caroline Trigg, dog warden for Fenland District Council, and founder of Ravenswood Pet Rescue, said: “He is very sore and has a long way to go until he’s out of the woods but he’s taking baby steps in the right direction.
“Thanks everyone for your kind support and love for Brewster. We can’t wait until he is in his foster home with lots of TLC.
“Also many thanks to everyone who donated and took part in our mini fund raiser to find a name. It raised £450.”
Brewster is an English Setter, which is on the rare breed list, which Caroline says makes it so bewildering that he is in such a mess as a stray.
“Our beautiful Brewster is looking much better after the first attempt to get rid of the tar.
“Our lovely vet nurse stayed after work until nearly 9pm on Friday night cleaning him up.

“I have seen a number of comments regarding dog wardens and stray dog protocol, foreign rescue/chips etc and I’d like to reassure everyone that legal processes are being followed, the relevant enquiries have been made and investigations carried out.
“Brewster had a foreign microchip but it is unregistered. We have looked into it from every angle, thanks to our foreign rescue contacts.
”
Brewster was found wandering alongside a railway line in Croydon. He wandered into a railway workers hut where staff immediately rushed to his help to find food for the emaciated animal.
Ravenswood are based in Fenland but take in animals from other councils, including five London boroughs.
If the dogs are not rescued for re-homing, then the animals are put to sleep on day eight of being in their local council dog pound.
