FENLAND’S stars were out for the region’s equivalent of the Oscars with Wisbech thespians taking home a host of awards.

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) 2011 Eastern Awards were held at the Raddison Blu Hotel in Stansted at the end of last month and the Wisbech Players, one of the longest-standing amateur theatre groups in Fenland took home the best drama certificate for their produciton of Terrence Rattigan’s The Deep Blue Sea.

In the face of stiff competition from Wisbech rivals the Right Angles Theatre Company - who won best pantomime and best musical - the Wisbech Players also went on to win the best overall production shield.

Gordon Ringrose, chairman of the Wisbech Players and director of the winning play, said: “Naturally, I am thrilled our society has won these three prestigious awards and I’m particularly pleased for all the people involved in staging this challenging play.

“These awards, and those won by The Angles Theatre group, demonstrate that Wisbech produces the best theatre for its audiences in the eastern region and we hope we can continue this winning trend with our next production, Calendar Girls - at the Angles theatre in October.”
