I READ with interest your front page article headed ‘Worse than prison’.

As parents it is our responsibility to teach our children right from wrong, good morals and manners and to respect themselves and others. That includes teaching our children to obey rules no matter how daft they might appear. I feel this family are showing a complete disrespect for the school and their rules, which I am sure, have been enforced for a reason! It is a sad fact that there are quite a few children in today’s society that lack these skills because they are just not taught by parents. I am not saying the Coombs family are guilty of this but I am saying as responsible parents they should be supporting the school and encouraging their daughter to follow the rules as they would expect her to follow them at home. Sometimes, especially when it comes to our children, it is easy to get caught up in emotional responses, but at some point we have to take a step back and look at situations in a rational light which in this case is Shannon’s education which is more important than her piercings and her opinion of the rules she has to follow.
