AT its meeting on Tuesday the Rotary Club of March had as its guest speaker Rtn John Cooper, area fund-raising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mr Cooper, a member of Soham Staploe Rotary, explained the history of the charity, which was set up in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan who watched his father die of cancer. The charity, renamed this year as Macmillan Cancer Support, is increasingly a source of support for people living with cancer today and is a force for improving cancer care.

There are three times as many people in Britain living with cancer than there were 30 years ago.

In fact more than a million people have had a cancer diagnosis, and one in three of us will be diagnosed at some point in our lives.

With improvements in screening, diagnosis and treatment, more and more people are being diagnosed earlier and living with cancer for longer.

After answering questions Mr Cooper was thanked by Bruce Wood.
