The man who died after a car collided with a tree has been named as Saffron Walden 33-year-old Clinton Louis Smith.

Essex Police today (July 16) identified the man, who died after the crash in Chestnut Avenue on July 2.

The driver of the car, a 34-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released and remains under investigation.

Mr Smith was a passenger in a white Volkswagen Polo, which left the road and collided with a tree at 12.30am on July 2. Paramedics attended but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time of the crash, two other people were taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A spokesman for Essex Police said investigations into the crash are ongoing.
