Police cadets from the Wisbech and Cambourne units set sail for the weekend as part of a team building exercise to learn more about the activity.
Organised with the Rona Sailing Project, a charity dedicated to providing opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to learn to sail, the cadets spent two days working as the crew of a 62ft schooner boat.
Over a weekend the cadets were responsible for everything on board and learnt a variety of different sailing knots, as well as the basic skills required to steer the boat and hoist the sails.
DC Richard Diggle, one of the cadet leaders who accompanied them, said: “It was great to see the cadets rise to the challenge they had signed up for.
“They really embraced the experience; the increase in their confidence was noticeable and their high spirits were infectious.
We wouldn’t have been able to provide this experience to them without the generous funding from the police and crime commissioner’s office and the dedication and hard work from the charity’s volunteers.”
Jason Ablewhite, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire, said: “My thanks go to all the volunteers who helped provide the youngest generation of our policing family with this unique life experience.
“I am immensely proud of the contribution our cadets make to help keep our communities safe.”
The Rona Sailing Project is one of the oldest sailing charities in the country. It has been established for more than 50 years and has taken more than 20,000 young people on trips that they might not otherwise have had.
They have four full time staff and a network of more than 400 volunteers who form the crews of the vessels when they are at sea.
