THE sentence of a 17-year-old boy, jailed for a brutal attack which has left a man in a constant vegetative state, could be reviewed by the Attorney General.

Shane Wright of Eastrea was last month jailed for just over three years for his role in the attack on Paul Machin last year as he walked home from a pub.

Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson contested the sentences of Wright and his accomplice Kieron Hennessy, of Deeping St James, after the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to appeal against the sentences.

Mr Jackson told the House of Commons: "It has become increasingly clear that the Crown Prosecution Service is unwilling to appeal against this grossly unsatisfactory sentence."

Leader of the house, Jack Straw, said he would bring the matter up with the Attorney General and told Mr Jackson: "He has never failed to refer cases that have merit to the Court of Appeal."

The pair attacked Mr Machin and his partner Jane Powell in Orton Waterville, Peterborough, in September last year while the couple were on their way home from watching an England football match in a pub.

Wright and Hennessy had committed the attack while on bail for another violent assault.
