POLICE arrested six people across Cambridgeshire as part of a day of action to tackle metal theft in the county.

About 40 officers were involved in the crackdown which is part of Operation Saruman.

Suspects were arrested in raids and in checks carried out at scrap metal dealers.

The arrests come as a result of months of hard work by officers to gather intelligence and evidence against those suspected of stealing metal, mainly lead or copper, from locations across Cambridgeshire.

In four months, July to October, last year, there were 657 metal thefts in the county. This was more than double the number for the same period in 2006 at 321.
