NE Cambs MP Steve Barclay has written to the Health Secretary and the NHS medical director after hearing of the Sling the Mesh campaign.

He said: “I am deeply concerned that two constituents in three months appear to be seriously harmed by a medical product over which a number of questions have been raised.

“I have written to the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, and to Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director raising a number of urgent questions including whether the Department of Health is urgently reviewing the safety of TVT mesh, whether patients are receiving adequate information about the risks involved, why the product has been suspended in Scotland and I understand in Australia but continues to be used in England and whether adequate measures are in place including sufficient clinicians to deal with problems when they arise from this product.

“It is particularly harrowing to hear of the distressed caused to patients when errors occur. It is essential that we get quick decisions so that if there are problems with the product more patients do not suffer through its use in further operations in the weeks ahead.

“I also will be support constituents in ensuring they get the right care moving forward to get urgent concerns with this product answered and to ensure they get the right care to mitigate in medical complications that have arisen.”
