FORMER Chief Constable Julie Spence will address a Women’s Day conference in Cambridge and ask if Britain can expect another woman Prime Minister or another woman as Cambridgeshire’s top cop.
Anglia Ruskin University will be celebrating International Women’s Day with a special free event on its Cambridge campus on Saturday from 10am to 2.30pm.
‘No going back! What next for women today’ will feature a host of workshops, exhibitions and stalls, as well as talks from a range of academics and women’s groups?
There will be presentations from Professor Helen Valentine, Dr Liz Bradbury and Emma Brett from Anglia Ruskin, and Professor Dame Athene Donald from the University of Cambridge.
The keynote speech will be delivered by Julie Spence OBE. The former Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire, who is now on the Board of Governors at Anglia Ruskin, will deliver a talk entitled ‘The Lady’s Not For Turning: but are we too complacent about our progress?’
She said: “Women have made significant progress and have shown that no challenge or career is out of bounds; but when will we have our second Prime Minister or Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire?
“I will be exploring whether we are in a period of complacency thinking we have done it once so everything is okay – but is it? History shows over 60 men have been Prime Minister and about 20 have been Chief Constables within the county of Cambridgeshire.”
Other participants include members of Gender Action for Peace and Security, UK Feminista, Cambridge City Council, Womankind, Feminist Action Cambridge, CUSU Women’s Campaign, Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre, Cambridge Women’s Aid, Cambridge Women’s Resources Centre and Women of Note.

The University of Cambridge’s annual International Women’s Day lecture, this year given by journalist and broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, will take place at Downing College on March 8(5.45pm).
