March will come alive with the sights and sounds of the 60s, 70s and 80s when the town’s popular St George’s Fayre returns to mark its tenth anniversary.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the celebrations on this Sunday, when the streets will be filled with a fantastic array of arts and entertainment celebrating the pop music and colourful culture of bygone days.
This year’s event is set to be the biggest and best yet, with 150 stalls and attractions promising something for all ages.
The fun kicks off at 10.15am with a grand parade into the Market Place in celebration of St George, followed by the official opening by March Mayor, Cllr Kim French, at 10.35am.
Live music and performances will then continue throughout the day, with a host of bands, drama and dance groups taking to the stage including 20Twenty Academy, which has helped organise the Market Place entertainment this year.
There will also be fun fair rides, birds of prey, circus skills workshops and magic shows; stalls selling artisan foods, drinks, produce and crafts, and the annual duck race, starting from the town bridge at 3pm.
Broad Street and High Street will be closed during the event, with diversion routes in place from 5am to 7pm. Cycling is not permitted within the event area. Free parking is available in the City Road and Darthill Road car parks.
St George’s Fayre is one of the Four Seasons events delivered by Fenland District Council and a committee of volunteers, with support from March Town Council.
In her introduction to the Fayre programme, Cllr French writes: “I’d like to thank everyone involved in the organisation of the Fayre, their support has been invaluable and with it being the 10th anniversary I’m sure there will be lots of treats in store for those attending.”
Councillor Jan French, chairman of the St George’s Fayre organising committee, said: “The Fayre gets better and better each year and I have no doubt this year’s celebrations will be any different. The community spirit shown on the day is wonderful, and I can’t wait for it to get underway.”
Councillor Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s Cabinet member responsible for Four Seasons, added: “A tremendous amount of hard work and effort goes into making the Fayre as successful as it is. I hope as many people as possible turn out and enjoy everything it has to offer.”
