A GROUP of Russian tourists visited St Wendreda’s Church, March, with a particular interest in the internationally famous double hammerbeam angel roof.
Historian Trevor Bevis gave the visitors a brief history of the church and the story behind the 500-year-old roof, said by experts to be the finest in Britain.
Mr Bevis said: “The group was amazed to hear that hundreds of years ago pickled eels and wool from the Fens were sent to Russian ports on ships associated with the Hanseatic League, a trading organisation.”
Church ladies served light refreshments to the tourists.
