STEVE Barclay MP has pledged to fight to stop the closure of Chatteris sorting office.

The MP is one of a growing number to sign a petition against the plans to close the Park Street office which could mean residents face a 20-mile round trip to pick up undelivered post.

The NE Cambs MP said: “I’m throwing my weight fully behind the campaign and calling on councillors, residents and the community as a whole to come together and fight for this short-sighted closure decision.

“Royal Mail is ignoring the increase in population and planned growth in Chatteris, with Fenland District Council talking of an extra 1,000 homes.

“It does not reflect the geography of the Fens with the nearest alternative sorting office in March with very little public transport.

“I have phoned Royal Mail to make clear my opposition and have requested a meeting. I hope we can all come together to oppose this decision.

“I recognise the changes Royal Mail face in terms of the reductions in overall mail volumes and their financial position, not least their pension liability.

“However, the efficiencies required to address those long standing major issues will not be resolved by a short-term decision which flies in the face of a growing population and the geography of Chatteris and the surrounding area.”

Royal Mail say the move will provide improved working conditions and secure employment. They have also said staff will be reimbursed for the extra mileage as a result of the move.
