The New Bedford River was a sea of yellow on Saturday as part of a fund-raising rubber duck race.

More than 340 ducks took to the start line at the Three Pickerels pub, in Mepal, with the £50 top prize causing a fierce battle among backers as the plastic ducks floated between two bridges.

And a stewards’ inquiry was required at the finish line as two ducks, which had hooked together, crossed the line simultaneously. In the end, the first prize was split between the owners of the two ducks.

The event was organised by Mepal and Witcham Pre-school together with the Three Pickerels pub, with more than £230 raised being donated to the pre-school and the Mepal and Witcham School Friends Committee.

As part of an entire afternoon of family activities at the pub, there was also a bouncy castle, raffle, games, barbecue and face painting.
