TWO Sunday bus services in the Fens have been saved after Cambridgeshire County Council agreed to subsidise them for another year.

The 337 service and the 19 service were two of 15 services under threat, as part of reviews into the future of services supported by the authority.

But, through hard bargaining, the county council made savings to secure the future of the two services, along with 11 others, for now.

Councillor John Reynolds, a member of the county council's Transport and Delivery Service Development Group, said: "We listened carefully to what the public told us and worked closely with bus operators to continue to run as many of these essential services as possible."

The 337 service will be kept under review, to make sure it is tailored for passengers and represents the best value for money.

Chris Boor, director of Long Sutton-based Cavalier Travel which runs the service, said: "It is safe and we are committed to it as a company, and have ongoing investment in the service."

That investment will see two new vehicles put into service. The single-deck coaches include 40 seats and a low floor, and will be rolled out for the first time on Thursday (March 8).

The 337 service is run roughly every half an hour, from the bus stop outside the council houses on the way into Coates to the Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough.

They also run a service from outside Chatteris Police Station every two hours, which adds Doddington, Wimblington, March and Turves to the route.

The 19 service, which runs every two hours from Wisbech Horsefair to Cambridge, via March, Chatteris, Ely and Milton, has also been retained but is going to be partially covered commercially.
