Swirling winds caused mayhem in Wilburton this morning, with trees brought down, torrential rain and damage to houses.

Reports of a ‘tornado-like’ event reached police shortly after 8am and officers arrived in Station Road shortly after to find five trees had been brought down in high winds, with one blocking a main road.

There were also reports of a whole garden fence and shed being torn up in the wind and smashed into a house.

Highways officials closed Station Road to traffic while recovery crews worked to clear the scene.

Chris Jay, a courier who was in the area at the time, said: “The wind took the whole fence down and trees also came down in the road. I didn’t see how the house was damaged but I was told that it got caught up in a mini tornado. It must have been to have damaged the roof.”

A water main also burst in the area, leaving hundreds of homes in Wilburton and nearby Stretham without water. Anglian Water said it expected normal service to have been restored by 6pm.
