Officers were called just before 11am to the Daniels Road and Newmarket Road roundabout in the city to a collision involving the G reg Escort, a police armed response vehicle - BMW X5 - and a Vauxhall Astra.

A police spokesman said; “No one was injured during the incident, however significant damage was caused to all three vehicles.”

Daniel Williams, 21, of no fixed address, was detained at the scene and was taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

“Officers used a taser during arrest,” said the spokesman.

Williams was later charged with eight offences including dangerous driving, two counts of making off without payment, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen goods, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. He was remanded in custody and appeared before Norwich magistrates today.

As these pictures show, the Ford Escort – stolen from Russell Avenue, March- was stopped on the Daniels Road roundabout close to Notcutts garden centre.

A 38-year-old woman was gardening at the front of her Newmarket Road home and heard sirens and saw about four police cars “flying past” down Newmarket Road, later followed by ambulances.

A 50-year-old woman from Eaton Road said a friend had been stuck in traffic on Newmarket Road and said “there had been sirens going on for about an hour”.

There were around nine police vehicles on the scene yesterday lunchtime with the roundabout partially blocked while officers carried out investigations and waited for the damaged vehicles to be recovered.
