A TEENAGER is in hospital with life threatening injuries after the car he was driving left a Fenland road yesterday.

The 18-year-old man was driving a Ford Fiesta which collided with a tree after leaving the B1050 Chatteris Road, Somersham, at 4.30pm.

Emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed off while the driver was freed from the vehicle. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with life-threatening injuries.

The road was re-opened shortly after 8pm.

The vehicle was travelling to Chatteris at the time of the collision.

A police spokesman said: “Pc Martin Arrowsmith, investigating, would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or the vehicle just prior.”

Magpas’ Helimedix attended the crash. In attendance was Magpas volunteer Dr Alex Schueler, with East of England Ambulance Service Trust critical care paramedic Dan Cody.

They went to the scene via a rapid response vehicle at 4.35pm and, after arriving, provided pre-hospital critical care to the driver who had sustained a serious head injury.

Debbie Florence, Magpas’ Helimedix spokeswoman, said: “Magpas Helimedix team extricated the male from car, with the help from ambulance crew on scene, and anaesthetised the patient on scene before escorting him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the region’s specialist trauma centre, by land ambulance.”
