Tesco has seen the future –and it’s not all about shopping if a new concept of a community space at their new Wisbech store is anything to go by.
The supermarket chain has provided a community space where visitors can enjoy tea and coffee, surf the internet and play with their children.
It is all part of a new ‘roll out’ of plans by the company which believes their stores should offer something extra in the battle to win customers.
Chris Bush, UK Managing Director, said: “We’ve spoken a lot about our vision to create compelling retail destinations in our larger stores; places where customers come to spend time and meet their friends and family.”
At Wisbech that included providing a room, available for any group of organisation to enjoy, that was officially unveiled on Monday.
During the day about 50 people, including the mayor of Wisbech Councillor Samantha Hoy and representatives from Cambridgeshire County Council and other groups, checked out the facilities.
Leverington Primary Academy pupil Nicole, who was accompanied by head teacher Rosie Simmonds, cut the ribbon.
This is the seventh community room that Tesco has opened, with 46 more openings planned for the rest of the year.
The space has tea and coffee facilities, baby and toddler mats, four computers and WIFI access.
Tesco community champion Heidi Moat said: “We are over the moon with the response. We were not expecting that many people so for all the different organisations to turn up was really good.”
