TESCO has admitted that those Station Road, Whittlesey, residents who never wanted them there could guarantee that by getting behind their for an alternative Eastrea Road store.

“We know that many of you living on Station Road and Inhams Road did not support us in putting a store on Station Road,” says a leaflet put through residents’ doors.

The leaflet says the main objection was concern over extra traffic so we “therefore hope that you will support us in trying to do the right thing and put the store in a better place”.

The leaflet has been issued by Harrier Developments, the Isle of Man registered company run by Richard Sears of Manea. He has been involved in several supermarket schemes for Fenland – including securing consent for a Tesco store in Chatteris.

“Our proposals for Tesco on Eastrea Road seek to effectively move the consented Station Road store and put it in a better place,” says Harrier.

“We want to make sure that we build the store in the right place. This is why we chose to delay the construction of the Station Road site.”

The leaflet says that Harrier if the switch to Eastrea Road happens then the permission for Station Road “will be removed by the council. If we don’t receive permission on Eastrea Road then we will build the store for Tesco to occupy on Station Road.”

Harrier also says that a rival bid by Sainsbury for an alternative site in Eastrea Road “cannot stop us building our store on Station Road. We are the only ones who can agree with the council removing our consent on Station Road and we won’t do this unless we have permission on Eastrea Road.”

Residents are urged to contact Fenland Council with their views; the council’s planning committee will decide both Eastrea Road proposals sometime this year.
