Workers at a Fenland supermarket picked up shovels and teamed up with volunteers from a community group to clear an overgrown piece of land.

Tesco Extra staff from the Wisbech store worked together with Street Pride members to help turn the National Trust land at the entrance to the Chapel Road car park in Wisbech into a community garden.

Store manager Kevin Chestnutt said: “We are keen to become involved in the Wisbech community and support local organisations, and our team volunteering for the day is just one of the ways we can achieve this.”

Street Pride coordinator Rebecca Robinett said: “I would like to thank Kevin and his team for all their help in clearing the land, which will be turned into a community garden with the support of the Fenland District Council, resident volunteers and the National Trust.”

Councillor Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for environment and growth, said: “This is a great example of how organisations and volunteers taking part in the council’s Street Pride initiative can work together to improve and take pride in Fenland.”

Tesco has also launched a community room at their Cromwell Road store. For more information on booking it, contact Tesco community champion Heidi Mote on 07516 050 343 or e-mail wisbech@communityattesco.co.uk
