RELATIVES have paid tribute to the father-of-two, killed by a suspected hit-and-run driver, and described him as "a kind, caring, bright individual" who will be "eternally missed".

James Pugh, 37, was walking home after Boxing Day drinks in his local pub in Parson Drove when it is believed he was knocked down by a vehicle as he crossed Main Road, outside the Butcher's Arms. His body was found by a passer-by just after midnight.

He had been out with his wife of 12 years, Jackie, who had left the pub earlier, and friends from the Parson Drove football team.

James, known by friends as Jamie, had moved to the Wisbech area from Surrey a few years ago and lived at the family home in Main Road with Jackie and his two sons, Joe and Jimmy. He had worked for Cleanway as a contracts manager for the last three years.

Educated in Surrey, James had recently studied and passed exams in occupational safety and health, and had gained management qualifications.

A keen fisherman and golfer, he was also a life-long Queen's Park Rangers fan and also supported Parson Drove Football Club.

James' parents, Jim and Barbara Pugh, and his wife Jackie said in a joint statement: "A beloved husband, father, son and brother, Jamie was married to Jackie for 12 years and had two wonderful sons, Joe and Jimmy, both of whom have adopted Jamie's other love - that of motorcycles.

"Jamie had a great many attributes. He was a kind, caring, bright individual who could always be called upon to lend a hand. No job was too small or too much trouble.

"He will be eternally missed and loved by all his family and friends."

An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.

* A 36-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, both from Parson Drove, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but later released without charge. The woman was bailed to return on February 8.
