Page (2) A message from the Leader of FDC, Councillor Alan Melton. Alan said ‘’A two page spread on my home town of Chatteris’’. It is pleasing to know he still realises that he does represent Chatteris on FDC. However, each time I write to Alan concerning important issues, which are important to the people of Chatteris, [the same people who elected him to represent them;] his replies are of an apologetic negative nature. I recall two occasions, one five years ago re Doddington Hospital, and this year the second attempt to put a Supermarket on land close to the old chapel in New Road. Alan’s replies on both issues indicated that he agreed with my facts and sentiments; but he could not get involved with these issues because of his position on FDC. It is no wonder that Chatteris is lacking in many things which the other three Market Towns take for granted. For example. The lead story in this summer issue, ‘Hit the road Gym‘, which is continued on page two, the villages get the mobile Gym weekdays; with Chatteris getting the facility for five hours on Sundays 10am to 3pm
Do FDC think Chatteris people do not visit church or chapel, and enjoy the traditional Sunday Lunch?. Maybe some do, but the majority think anything will do for Chatteris; they also know Cllr Melton won’t speak out about this because of the position he holds at Fenland Hall.
Page (5) What’s on in Fenland? The answer is plenty, apart from Chatteris; because we have nothing to offer. Page (6) Summer Fun for Kids. There is a colour coded chart of events around Fenland, sadly no mention of Chatteris; we did not even qualify for colour code.
The Centre pages Alan spoke about. I agree that we have a good community spirit, and we have good local talent; but that is about it. As for the paintings in the centre of Park Street of dead comics and aged cartoon characters; that does not depict a town with energy and initiative.
The back page rubs salt into the wounds of Chatteris people, ‘’Come and get healthy at our Leisure Centres at March, Wisbech, and Whittlesey‘’. Well I suppose we could drop in after we have taken our excess waste to the Hundred Road tip, or visited the Registrar of Births and Deaths; that would also allow us to bypass the mobile Gym and savour our visit to church before Sunday Lunch.
Sorry there wasn’t room for this on the ‘Tell us what you think column‘.
