Wimblington will be lit up for the first time in around eight years after a group was set up to make sure the village sparkles for the festive season.

A Christmas lights group launched in February and has raised just under £3,000 with bacon butty mornings, a horse race night, quiz night and donations from local businesses as well as donations from residents.

The money has bought new lights and refurbished some items from the previous displays.

A grand switch on is planned for Sunday November 29.

The event will begin with a craft fayre at the parish hall from 4pm with hot food, refreshments and mulled wine.

At 4.20pm, Father Christmas will set off around the village on his sleigh trailer loaded with sweets and armed with collection buckets to collect any spare change.

His sleigh will arrive at the hall at around 6pm in time to hear the children of Thomas Eaton School singing Christmas songs ready for the switch on at 6.30pm.

Father Christmas will be helped by a band of elves and the switch on will be assisted by Millie Rooney, from Thomas Eaton School. Millie was the winner in a poster competition held to produce the flyer advertising the event.

There will be festive games, stalls, a fairground ride, and live music in the parish hall car park.
